Mercia Marina drops fireworks for drone light display this Bonfire Night – Staffordshire Live

Bosses will have a ‘family and pet friendly’ quieter event
A major South Derbyshire attraction is swapping fireworks for drone light display this bonfire weekend.
Mercia Marina, in Willington, is leading the way for what it describes as the 'first drone event in South Derbyshire and UK'.
When many events for Guy Fawkes will be having fireworks, Mercia bosses have said they have decided to take a different approach and gone for the family and pet-friendly option by having a drone light display set to music, so there will be no loud bangs to upset pets and wildlife.

A spokesman said: "Many local residents, community boaters and holiday guests welcome a rest from the normal noisy display as we are sure do pets and wildlife."
The event on Saturday, November 6, will be held from 4.30pm to 7.30pm with the drones planned to be out from 7pm to 7.30pm, dependent on the weather conditions.
Performers on stilts in LED costumes will add to the atmosphere of the event, as well as a fire dance with pyrotechnics and live music from an acoustic duo performing an indie and pop covers set.
The display will be professionally delivered by Flightshows one of the only companies in the UK with authorisation to perform swarm drone shows using the latest LED drone technology to create almost any pattern or shape in the sky, a spokesman for Mercia Marina has said.
George Chatburn, FlightShows director, said: "Coming from a background in theatre and live events, FlightShows like to combine art and the latest drone technology to create a spectacular show for audiences. Being a Derby based company we wanted to offer something back to the community after a tough few years for all, and where better to light up the skies than over the water of the UK’s largest inland marina."
As with all events at Mercia Marina, there is free entry and free parking.
